Okay, so here we are, right in the middle of autumn and still in our COVID world. But don’t despair. I think back to March, my inbox lighting up with one email after another with announcements of destinations and hotels locking down. I could barely catch my breath.
Everything was a complete unknown back then. We were trekking in uncharted territory and we knew so little about this virus.
Fast forward to today, and think about all that we now know, and the safety measures being taken. Planes are sparkling clean like you have never seen them before. All passengers and staff are required to wear masks.
Some airlines have been keeping middle seats empty. However, reading the news recently, it does appears that some airlines may considering scaling back on this. But the good news is that it’s due to a recent Harvard study which determined that the air quality of flight travel is very safe in regards to COVID.
The study concluded that airline HEPA health filtration systems makes flying safer than going to the grocery store. According to the report made by Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health “This effectively counters the proximity travelers are subject to during flights. Because of the frequent exchange of air and HEPA filters on planes, over 99% of the particles containing the virus are removed from cabin air”.
In addition, planes are boarding passengers sitting in the back first in order to keep passenger interaction to a minimum. I never understood why this was not always enforced to begin with. It was always one of my pet peeves of plane travel.
As far as hotels, they are abiding by strict cleanliness protocols and many have introduced seamless, contactless check-in and check-out processes. The tourism industry is figuring it out and some people are still traveling safely and enjoyably.
