What Makes This European City Stand Out From The Rest?

It has style and sophistication yet it’s not stuffy or reserved. Vienna is a beautiful city with a great appreciation for life. Their rich history dates back to Imperial times when the Habsburg Empire ruled the Holy Roman Empire. Palaces, art, music, rich history, food and some pretty amazing wine.

The city’s fun and colorful outdoor markets entice you with a display of fresh food, fish and produce. I could have eaten my way through Vienna. The famous Naschmarket was the perfect setting for lunch on a sunny mid-March day. And as I always suggest: do as the locals do! So we accompanied our meals with an order of local beer and the delicious Blaufrankish Austrian wine.

Schnitzel is a wonderful Viennese dish of breaded lightly fried veal; you’ll want to enjoy it with a side of spinach dumplings. Sausage being a local staple meant we had to experience a sausage sandwich the Viennese way by ordering a kaiserkrianer – the famed cheesed filled sausage from one of the local sausage stands, many of which are found by the opera house.

Restaurants of every price point are available. You’ll want to treat yourself to a fabulous fine dining experience at least one night; you will have quite a selection to choose from as the city boasts 14 Michelin star restaurants, totaling 19 stars among them.

Evenings are splendidly fun and elegant in Vienna! Part of the sophistication of this city is its love of music and the fine arts. The elegant Opera House offers nightly opera and ballet performances that the residents frequent. Afterwards enjoy an evening stroll along the renowned boulevard of Ringstrasse passing beautiful plazas and streets.

Along the way you will turn a corner and discover beautiful churches and buildings dating from centuries ago such as St. Stephen’s Cathedral and St. Charles church.

Linger for a while as you make your way to one of the popular coffee shops for some delightful Viennese coffee and pastries. There is a strong coffee culture in Vienna. The citizens love to hang out in them for hours. And how they enjoy their pastries here, and you’ll note that this is where the term “Viennese table” originates. There are a variety of beautiful pastries to choose from but a must-have is the famous Sacher torte, which is any chocolate lovers dream, served with just a dollop of freshly whipped unsweetened cream that should be ideally eaten with each bite in order to experience it the Viennese way. Yum.

The Habsburg Dynasty which ruled from 1438 to 1740 made for several fascinating characters and stories which our tour guide happily shared with us, such as Emperor Franz Joseph and their final ruler Empress Maria Theresa who had 16 children!

Step into their life and times as you explore the interiors of the Imperial Palace and Schoenbrunn Palace, the royalty’s summer home featuring a maze of beautifully manicured gardens. Then there is Belvedere Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which houses one of the greatest collections of Austrian art dating from the Middle Ages to the present day, including the work of Claude Monet and Vincent van Gogh.

The local language spoken is German but English is widely understood so I guarantee you will feel completely at home and will fall in love with Vienna as I did.
