Always looking for an excuse to head to Europe, this spring my college daughter, spending a semester abroad in Prague, gave me the perfect reason to pack my bags once again.
Prague, the capital city of the Czech Republic, is situated in Central Europe. It is truly one of the most beautiful cities I have visited. At every turn you are captivated by richly intricate architecture, charming bridges and a castle that beautifully dominates the landscape. You feel as if you have stepped into a fairytale city. But as delicate as that might sound this city is actually much more complex historically and culturally with a hip, fun edge to it that I know you will enjoy. Some of you may have even heard of Prague for its famous “John Lennon Wall” but there is way more beyond the wall to see here.
- Tour Prague Castle – the most ancient castle in Europe – a must do and very memorable!
- After visiting the castle head over to the nearby Monastery just outside of downtown for wonderful views of the city and enjoy a delicious traditional Czech meal at Restaurant Bellavista. On a warm afternoon you may even secure a table outside.
- Visit the local farmers market Jirak Market (open Wed-Sat). There’s a Jerk chicken stand run by a native Caribbean local that is amazing.
- Drink a Pilsner Urquell, the Czech signature beer, at Letna Beer Garden located in Letna park – everyone sits around enjoying each other’s company while soaking in the great view of the city. Best to go during sunset or late afternoon.
- Have dinner at Cafe Savoy where you will enjoy fantastic Czech food. Admire the beauty of its interiors, especially the ceiling, which is a UNESCO world heritage site. It’s not often that you find a restaurant listed as part of UNESCO!
6. Explore the cool underground bars – yes, literally there are bars built underground; it is part of the Prague history and culture. U Sudu is one of the popular ones to try.
- Visit the most important museums in the city: The National Museum & New National Museum. The exterior and interior of the neo-renaissance building is a work of art in itself. Inside you will learn the history of Czechoslovakia during the communist era and how it came to split into the countries of Czech Republic and Slovakia.
8. Regardless of your religion, everyone should tour the Jewish Quarter. Formerly a Jewish Ghetto where all of the Jewish people were forced to settle, it consists of a synagogue, cemetery and other monuments and memorials. You will need an entire afternoon to see everything. It’s a moving and important part of history that we should always remember.
- Catch the ringing of the astronomical clock at Old Town Square, a lively place to gather. This is one of the oldest working clocks in the world and is a mathematical phenomenal feat, considering it was constructed in 1410.
10. Take the local public transportation. It is super inexpensive, clean and more reliable and efficient than many other cosmopolitan destinations. With 1 pass you can access the metro, tram, and buses.
As always, we are here to arrange all the details of your European vacation from flights, hotel, tours and all necessary transportation. Can’t wait to send you packing to Prague!
