I Booked A Vacation During Hurricane Season – Oh No!!
With Harvey, Irma and Maria all making the news this year you might be feeling a little anxious
about traveling during the hurricane season. Maybe wondering if you should be avoiding the
hurricane months all together.
Well let’s break down some of the facts so you can make the best decision possible. First of all, the hurricane season runs from June 1st thru November 30th which means it spans half the year! So for many travelers, it is difficult to completely avoid these months altogether. If you are traveling with school age children you are likely traveling during the summer. If you are a honeymooner it is around the most popular wedding months. So, honeymooners, you are not alone: if anything, you are in the majority.
While this hurricane season has certainly experienced more activity than usual, the chances of your specific travel dates being impacted by a hurricane are still small. When you take into account that the most active hurricane months are September and October, your chances are reduced further.
The hurricane season can offer some very good prices and value so it is certainly worth considering traveling then. For instance, some high-end destinations are almost half the cost during this time compared to the winter months when all the celebrities and wealthy travelers are heading there for their winter escape.
Consider that if you travel during the winter months, not only are prices typically higher, you also run the risk of a winter storm interrupting your travel plans as well. The truth of the matter is, that there is no perfect time to travel. Mother Nature is something we cannot control.
So what is one to do?
First of all, purchase travel insurance. Good quality comprehensive travel protection will allow you to re-book your trip if the airlines cancel or the hotels cannot accept guests. If you are stuck in the destination and can’t get out, then the insurance will cover the cost of your extra nights’ stay as well as the additional expenses, such as meals. The cost of insurance will vary with your total trip cost, but it is minimal compared to the overall cost of your trip, the peace of mind it will provide, and the coverage that you will get in the event that something were to happen. I never leave the country without it and I travel during hurricane season every year.

Now who is going to help rearrange your travel plans or get you on the first flight out if you are already in the destination? That’s what Suntastic Honeymoons & Vacations is here for! Here is an example of what we do. The words from our very own clients speak for themselves:

We only have positive things to say about our travel specialist, Carmen…It turned out that we were scheduled to arrive back from our honeymoon as Hurricane Sandy was clobbering our airport of return. From the minute we heard the news that our flight might be canceled, she was answering our emails and doing everything she could do in order to get us on the next available flight back.
She kept an eye out for cancellations and notified us of the alternatives-even as she and her family were in the thick of the storm. We ended up only arriving back home a day late, where most people in our resort couldn’t find a way back home for days!”
